The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Research Staff Assistant for a temporary role to assist in the ACToday project. The Research Staff Assistant will conduct background research, namely a literature review documenting the currently existing climate services and climate information for pastoralists in both Ethiopia and East Africa more broadly, as well as potential ones. In doing so, the Research Staff Assistant will pay particular attention to investigating the potential of the FAO/Texas A&M Predictive Livestock Early Warning System (PLEWS) for Ethiopia, as well as existing institutions (national, regional, and international), that provide climate information and vegetation monitoring to pastoralists in the region, and in Ethiopia specifically. The Research Staff Assistant, with supervision from the ACToday Ethiopia team, may conduct some stakeholder interviews with those working with pastoralists in Ethiopia or East Africa.
Conduct literature review of current and potential use of climate services for pastoralists in East Africa and Ethiopia particularly.
Conduct stakeholder interviews (remotely, via call), as necessary, with pastoralist sectoral experts.
The Research Staff Assistant will report to and receive close supervision and guidance from the Staff Associate acting as ACToday Ethiopia Country Manager with input from the ACToday Ethiopia Country Lead.
Will exercise independent judgment and initiative within specific parameters set by the supervisor.
Bachelor's Degree in Earth Sciences, Social Sciences or closely related field.
Minimum of 6-12 months of related experience.
An advanced degree is desirable.
Familiarity with (or interest in) pastoralism, sustainable agriculture, climate change, international development, and the East African region is preferred.
Strong research, analytical, and writing skills are required, alongside a working proficiency of English.
Must be detail-oriented.
The candidate should be able to work remotely.
