SMBC Execution Trader, Associate/ Vice President in New York, New York

Overview

Primarily responsible for providing best execution of US EQ orders from institutional or corporate clients and Nikko Tokyo Retail. This includes order solicitation and capture, delivery of market and stock specific color and feedback to clients on trading results, as well as working with middle and back office teams to ensure smooth order completion (booking, contracting and settlement). This applies to orders for both secondary trading and primary offers. This role will also involve proactive solicitation of orders from existing and new clients by marketing our existing flows as appropriate and leveraging content from US and JP EQ research and sales, other content from within the firm, and self-generated content. This should be based on detailed knowledge of client needs and investment/trading preferences. Also responsible for engaging with counterparts in banking and ECM to develop and execute business plans to maximize revenues from buybacks and At-The-Market offerings. Responsibilities will expand when we introduce stock lending, swap and equity derivatives, and electronic trading business for US Equities in Japan Equity Group (JEG).

Responsibilities

  • Work with entire Execution Services Team to provide best execution of US EQ orders for all clients.

  • Maximize order flow and equity commissions from existing and new clients. Proactively engage clients with value-added content to generate flow. Market existing SMBC Nikko client flows as appropriate, leverage US and JP EQ research and sales content, and create self-generated content per client needs.

  • Map out the client universe (in coordination with US and JP EQ sales) to determine the optimal coverage universe with the greatest revenue potential. Create a business plan for approaching existing and new clients with a focus on developing new clients.

  • With the rest of the Execution Services Team coordinate closely with operations and support groups to ensure smooth front-to-back completion of orders (booking and settlement) and to improve the stability and performance of our systems and processes. Work with the business manager to plan and implement system and process improvements.the Business Manager, and all support groups to develop more efficient and effective processes and systems.

  • Support the build-out of new businesses within JEG including Stock Loan, Swaps and Derivatives, and Electronic Trading. Also, support Nikko Tokyo efforts to increase electronic trading in Japan for US institutional investors.

  • Support efforts by Execution Services, ECM and SMBC Bankers/RM's to market for and execute US EQ buybacks and ATM's.

  • Coordinate with NY ECM to provide maximum support for their order taking and market execution requirements in both primary issuance and secondary market trading situations.

  • Internal information sharing for optimal account management, risk mitigation and cross-selling.

Qualifications

  • Credibility and expertise in market execution and client engagement. This includes an understanding of market microstructure and mechanics, stock technicals and fundamentals, liquidity dynamics and SMBC Nikko’s strengths and weaknesses (and ability to deliver best-in-class outcomes).

  • Strong existing client relationships and the professionalism and gravitas to develop new client relationships based on trust, best execution, and value-added content delivery tailored to client-specific needs.

  • Ability to negotiate sophisticated and complex client relationships regarding access to our existing US Equity flows--ability to manage these relationships in order to ensure both best execution for clients and revenue maximization for the firm.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to communicate our content/service proposition to clients.

  • Eagerness and ability to trouble-shoot any and all issues that come up in the process of soliciting and executing client orders.

  • Analytical ability to determine the competitive positioning, gaps and opportunities in the client base coverage using McLagan, Greenwich, broker reviews and other data.
