Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, Communications, the Associate Director is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing management of communications strategies for several departments within the Facilities and Operations portfolio, including Columbia Dining, Columbia Housing, Lerner Hall and Event Management.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage the communication program for Columbia Housing, Dining, Event Management and Lerner Hall departments using various communications conduits (web/online, multi-media, emails, bulletins, articles, update reports, print materials and presentations).

  • Lead and collaborate with various members of the departments’ leadership team to create communication campaigns that deliver targeted information to the University’s diverse group of constituents.

  • Responsible for developing targeted, relevant, pertinent and constituent-specific information for Housing, Dining, Event Management and Lerner Hall.

  • Oversee and provide quality control of key messages and management of the departments’ brand.

  • Provide ongoing editorial assistance to the senior officers in the departments.

  • Review/edit written material prepared by others for message consistency, format, grammar, and style. Maintain current and relevant content on departmental websites.

  • Responsible for the planning of implementation of public events to promote departments (Food Fight, Room Selection, etc.)

  • Spearheads the department’s significant contributions to University Commencement (volunteers, signage, etc.)

  • Support the University’s office of Communications and Public Affairs by providing detailed informational briefings for use in working with the media.

  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 4-6 years of related experience required.

  • Strong writing skills with solid experience in delivering messages to diverse audiences.

  • Solid knowledge of technologies (desktop publishing, graphic software, presentational software).

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in public information campaigns, branding, and marketing.

  • Strong listening, speaking, and presentational skills. Strong editing skills.

  • Must be self-motivated and service oriented.

  • Ability to work independently, with appropriate initiative, creativity, and attention to detail and confidentiality required.

  • Must understand University campus services related issues and be able to explain in terms that are easily understood by all constituent groups.

  • Proven ability to bring closure to projects in a quality and timely manner.

  • Ability to interactive effectively cross-functionally with all levels of University personnel.

  • Ability to identify opportunities to promote Columbia’s brand.

  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and some weekends are required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree desirable.

  • Experience using social media for communications initiatives highly preferred.
